Turn over the pharmaceutical industry

Why do the powerful pharmaceutical industry, that a priori is dedicated to manufacturing drugs that help many people, have such a bad press? Many ask this question we'll try to advance some answers.

1. Regard to health the excessive profit is not well seen, in fact it is dangerous to health as we see in the U.S. with a totally private healthcare system with many problems.

2. The industry itself had been responsible for the research fund about efficacy and safety of their products. Positive studies are published negative no. Basic information is biased. This justifies the critical view that many professionals and citizens have toward new therapies.

3. Industry 's relationship with physicians were often contaminated. For many years with gifts and direct benefits, someway at present with a private education system based on expensive training courses and conferences. Is it possible to reformulate the relationship?

4. Continue doing things as usual. Is it not time to move forward and change?

The scenario is highly complex and a simple family phisician as me does not have the necessary knowledge but I dare to advance some key ideas:1. Therapeutic developments must add value to society. The profit motive that justifies the existence of the entire industry must be balanced by the ethica value of social justice. We need some way to ensure that the industry recovers its investment but without overloading the budget of sick people receiving their products. This regulation can not be imposed by the market. Companies that are able to carry it out will gain confidence and value to their clients and society.

2. Research can not rest solely in the hands of industry. Get objective information is essential to increase credibility. Other agencies have to lead independent lines of research budget by foundations or other models where the direct influence of the laboratory won´t not possible.

3. Medical - industry relationship has to be based on transparency. Physicians should not accept anything they consider unethical and not be able to tell their patients, colleagues and superiors. A new formulation of postgraduate training courses can be built over more efficient parameters. The #VideosySalud initiative is an example.

4. Doing things differently means daring to make decisions based on teamwork with other agents, patients, health professionals, health system managers and society in general.

I think it worth daring to think things differently. When you have a responsibility to society all wakefulness is not
enough.
