Seven Threats and Two False Promises of Health Big Data.

Seven Threats and Two False Promises of Health Big Data

One. Increased anxiety. Increased health concern for people who receive notifications of personal health values outside the normal limit.

Two: Constant increase in available biometric variables.

Three. Loss of privacy and intimacy.
The lack of traceability of personal data once uploaded to the cloud makes it impossible to know what use is made of them or to whom they are sold or transmitted. The possible copy and distribution that can be made with the big data will generate big benefits for those who commercialize it but not for those who generate it.

Four. Loss of economic and social rights.

Due to big data, insurance companies may vary premiums. Also the selection of Personnel and the human resources services can use these data to prime healthy profiles of a certain psychological orientation and to discard others that entail illnesses or potential problems.

Five Increase in overdiagnosis and overtreatment.

Faced with so much indeterminate biometric data, many people will feel insecure. Values outside normal limits can generate unnecessary diagnostic or therapeutic chains.

Six: Bombardment of high-impact advertising on health products based on data. Messages that will be difficult to avoid when touching the area of our health that will always be a priority.

Seven. Modification of the sanitary structure in search of the economic benefit and not of the social or personal one.

False promises:

One: Health will be improved

It is not entirely clear, given that although aspects of institutional efficiency can be improved at the personal level, this improvement is not quantified. On the other hand, it should be weighed whether the possible improvement in health indicators would compensate for the increase in concern for personal health or the increase in the perception of malaise or ill health.

Two: It will generate wealth.

Although this is potentially true, it is presumable that the exploitation of big health data will be carried out by large corporations and we can infer that it will be difficult to exploit at the level of researchers or small companies. There is no doubt that data are a new resource but the generation of tools and algorithms to obtain value from them will not be within everyone's reach.

Final reflection.

There are potential positive aspects but it is necessary to develop a deep reflection in order to implement a big data in health based on values and that promotes the defense of public health as well as personal health. Ensuring that big data in health does not lead to an uncontrollable lucrative business is an obligation for all social agents at the political level as well as at the level of health professionals and civil society in general. If this reflection is not carried out in depth, the market will favour the development of initiatives aimed at economic rather than social benefit. Speaking of health, this can be dangerous.
