Ayunar. Fasting. 禁食
Foto submarina de Rosa Taberner
Estamos empachados.
Fasting
We're indigested. Of bad news, of gloomy forecasts, of shouting and noise. We have no room for anything else. Yet we are still given more stuff. Every day we get more misfortunes, disastrous figures and misunderstandings in our veins through the powerful web of information, misinformation and manipulation that surrounds us.
And so we go, from surprise to surprise, with that bad taste in our mouth that we have not been able to sleep well because it is impossible to disconnect from such a negative current. The laments heard inside the primary health centres are the next level in sound intensity after years of varied, rather whispering, complaints and cries. Now it is a loud cry.
But no matter how much one cries, screams or expresses his discomfort, the terrible tummy pain and the feeling of indigestion are not alleviated. Something else is needed. The situation of brutal working overload is like a purgative, in every sense. We're going to leave, the health professionals first. Yet we are not relieved. If we ask one of those old village doctors, he will tell us that for indigestion it is best to fast until it passes.
Fasting from bad news, from confrontation, from misunderstandings, from news programmes full of poison, from headlines full of gall, from the anger of the social networks. Fasting from the permanent personal complaint, from that state of perpetual battle against those who think differently, against any kind of government, authority, politician or person in charge.
Perhaps if we stop overdosing ourselves with so much negativity we can start breathing a little easier. And take a walk, contemplate some clouds, savour a bite or enjoy a conversation.
Who would have thought that the most urgent social cure would be to fast? Well, you see, dare to try it and tell me about it.

Rezar. Pray.
Ahí tal vez podamos empezar a rezar.
Pray.
Imagine for a moment that there are no nurses, no doctors, no health system. Imagine that you have a health problem, choose the one you want. Imagine how slowly time passes with that boil, kidney colic, severe pain or oozing wound, knowing that you can only wait.
You don't have to go far, our great-grandparents had very limited access to health services. Even less so before them. They defended themselves with home remedies, some basic medication and only exceptionally were they able to access someone with sanitary habilities.
Many could only pray. And if they had no faith to endure the suffering as best they could.
Today we have forgotten to pray, something that is outdated when we can solve almost any problem by pulling a credit card or buying on line. The same goes for health. We have turned it into another consumer good by following the rules of the new market religion that prevails in our time.
But sometimes things go wrong and you get really sick or a pandemic comes along and overwhelms the health system. In those moments it is not possible to buy the solution, no matter how much money we have we will not find the way out. Then maybe we can start praying.
It is not easy in these times to remember that we are not the centre of the universe, but nature continues to show us this through hurricanes, fires, earthquakes and pandemics. We are vulnerable, pure lightness. Those of us who work in the health field know this well, as does anyone who has gone through any major pain or illness.
Recognising that our position in this world is very small and that there may be other references greater than ourselves opens the door to analysing our priorities.
Is prayer a health resource? Can it help those who are suffering from illness or difficulty?
What seems to be true is that we may need to open our minds and recognise that in extraordinary circumstances it is necessary to conjugate unusual verbs.
